World Diabetes Day aims to raise awareness about type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, and other lesser-known types such as MODY (Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young) and LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults).
The disease remains a substantial public health issue. Type 2 diabetes, which makes up for about 90% of diabetes cases worldwide, is largely preventable and, especially when triggered by other cardiometabolic risk factors such as obesity, potentially reversible if diagnosed and managed early.

Diabetes can take a toll on the patient’s mental health, as it requires a lot of self-management on a day-to-day basis. Constant monitoring and self-regulating eating and lifestyle choices can result in diabetes distress and burnout. With type 1 diabetes comes also the additional burden of self-injecting insulin, calculating factors such as carbohydrate intake, exercise, making daily life even more complicated.
